Re: Evidence-based Research in Complementary and Alternative Medicine I: History

There is much confusion in the literature regarding the term "traditional" medicine." This term rightly refers to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), which has its roots in healing traditions from around the world that for the most part predate science. Characterizing conventional, mainstream, "evidence-based" medicine as traditional medicine is both misleading and indicative of a very narrow perspective, since the conventional approach is based not in tradition but rather in science. The fact that conventional medicine has, in its relatively brief existence, developed what might be called traditions does not qualify it as traditional medicine.
